Maps
The Merced NCCP/HCP Study Area has been preliminarily defined in consultation with
California Department of Fish and Game and the US Fish and Wildlife Service,
based on both political boundaries and biological characteristics. The
northern, southern, and eastern Study Area boundaries correspond with Merced
County boundary lines. The Study Area includes all Merced County lands east
of Highway 99. This region consists primarily of a large connected area of
grasslands with soils that support vast vernal pool complexes not found on the
west side of Highway 99.
This vernal pool map was taken from Dr. Robert Holland's report, "Changes in
Great Valley Vernal Pool Distribution from 1989 to 1997." Dr. Holland
analyzed aerial photographs (at a scale of 1:10,400) to identify vernal pool
complexes and assigned attributes based on the size, density, and appearance
of the complexes.
