Background Information

Wildlife and Rare Plant Ecology of Eastern Merced County’s Vernal Pool Grasslands, edited by John E. Vollmar, describes the results of fieldwork conducted in eastern Merced County during 2001. John Vollmar and his team surveyed 12 ranches, covering almost 50,000 acres out of approximately 250,000 acres in the NCCP study area.

The report focuses on eight plant or animal groups, including rare plants, freshwater shrimp, amphibians, aquatic reptiles, birds, small mammals, medium to large mammals, and bats. The plant surveys specifically targeted rare plants while the animal surveys targeted both rare and common animals within the groups listed above

The report can be downloaded from this site and is also available via computer disk from the Merced County UC Development Office at 209-725-3700.
